Lazy Susan's
We’ve been making Lazy Susan’s for many years now. They are one of our most popular items, providing gifts to our customers for events from weddings and birthdays, to housewarmings. We have recently added a new design to our line of Suzies which allows us to go to sizes larger than 22”, the biggest we have offered in the past.
The larger size Suzies (we recently made a 44”) are not made with the traditional side by side, solid wood, plank style glue up. These larger sizes are assembled with a marine grade plywood core (for stability) and a thickface veneer (1/8” top and bottom) which cap a veneer that is wrapped around the edge. All the veneers are milled from solid stock here at our shop.
There are numerous advantages to this system. It is far more stable during weather changes or in moving from one climate to another. In addition we are able to use the finest Koa at a manageable price because the volume of Koa in the piece is reduced substantially. This method also allows us to “bookmatch” the pieces as they are laid out across the surface. Finally, when seated at a table looking at the edge of the Suzie you will be looking at beautifull woodgrain travelling the length of the edge of the Susie.
Koa is getting more expensive and more difficult to acquire. As a result this new approach has become standard in furniture making out here in the islands. This type of assembly has the additional advantage of being user friendly to the forest resource because, while it requires much more milling time and technical expertise, it reduces wood use substantially.
In doing these larger Suzies we have gone to a very expensive and beatifully engineered bearing system. These would be cost prohibitive in our smaller Suzies. They are comprised of two cast aluminum rings with sealed bearings in between. They are extraordinarily smooth and quiet.
These are a custom item and are not listed in our order sysytem They start at $435.00 for the 24” and go up from there. That price does not include shipping.
